At The Pet Carpenter, every project is a story of collaboration, creativity, and craftsmanship. We are excited to share our biggest custom build yet, a truly unique hallway installation designed for three beloved Flat-Coated Retrievers: Piper, Ness, and Ela.
The Vision: A Hallway for Dogs and Family Life
Our client, building her dream home in Scotland, came to us with a clear vision. She wanted a hallway that would serve as a welcoming space for her family while also providing comfortable and practical bedrooms for her dogs. She needed storage for coats, functionality for daily life, and a timeless design that would complement her new home.
Working closely with both the client and the project manager, we began with a design consultation to establish structure and scale. The first draft ensured the proportions were right, with adjustments to follow as details evolved.
From Design to Detail

The design underwent thoughtful refinements:
- Bars added to one of the bedroom ends for visibility and ventilation.
- Coat rails in each cupboard, with pull-down functionality for easy access.
- Upgrade to solid oak, ensuring durability and elegance.
- Bespoke soft furnishings added at the end of the project, crafted to perfectly complement the oak structure and ensure Piper, Ness, and Ela’s bedrooms are as comfortable as they are stylish.
To ensure ease of delivery and fitting, the piece was constructed in sections, crafted to assemble seamlessly within the client’s home.
The Final Build

The finished piece is a statement of form and function:
- Three dog bedrooms with removable bar dividers and up-and-over doors.
- Large drawers above each bedroom for practical storage.
- Three tall cupboards above, each with a double-door opening and pull-down coat rails.
- A sturdy, elegant oak structure, completed with brass latches and bars.
Why Oak?
Oak is a hardwood that has long been prized for furniture making. It offers:
- Strength and durability that withstand years of daily use.
- Natural resistance to wear, dents, and scratches.
- A classic grain and warmth, adding timeless character to interiors.
- Sustainability when responsibly sourced, making it an eco-conscious choice.
- Easy care and simple touch-ups that allow it to maintain its beauty for decades.
The Finishing Touch with Osmo

To complete the look, we partnered with Osmo to apply their Polyx®-Oil in Honey. This natural oil-and-wax finish enhances the oak’s rich tones while providing:
- Durable protection against wear and tear.
- Water and stain resistance for everyday life.
- A beautiful, breathable surface that highlights the natural wood grain.
- Eco-friendly credentials, being made from natural plant oils and waxes.
- Pet-safe reassurance, making it the perfect choice for furniture that will be part of Piper, Ness, and Ela’s everyday lives.
The client plans to add her own bespoke handles, ensuring the piece ties in seamlessly with the rest of her new home’s décor.
Awaiting Its Place in the Home
Delivered in parts for ease of access, the piece now awaits its final fitting within the hallway of our client’s newly built home. We look forward to sharing updates, photos, and a video tour once Piper, Ness, and Ela have moved into their new bespoke bedrooms.
This project is a perfect example of our mission, to design furniture that enhances the lives of pets while bringing beauty and practicality to the home.
