At The Pet Carpenter, we believe in helping dogs thrive by creating spaces that support their comfort and security. Understanding what dogs need to be happy and healthy is at the heart of responsible dog ownership. This is why we’re encouraging puppy parents to join the Generation Pup Study.
This long-term research project is helping scientists uncover new insights into canine health, behaviour, and welfare knowledge that will shape the future of how we care for dogs for generations to come.
What is Generation Pup?
Generation Pup is a groundbreaking study led by Dogs Trust, following puppies from an early age throughout their lives. Unlike other studies, it’s a cohort study, meaning it tracks individual dogs over time. This provides a much deeper understanding of how early experiences, environments, and routines influence a dog’s long-term health and behaviour.
This research is essential to answering some of the biggest questions in canine welfare, from what contributes to behavioural issues to how to better prevent diseases. The findings will help shape everything from veterinary care to training approaches. Aiming to give future generations of dogs the best possible start in life.
Why We’re Encouraging Puppy Parents to Get Involved
At The Pet Carpenter, we see firsthand how a dog’s environment plays a key role in their confidence, well-being, and ability to adapt to different situations. Every dog is unique, and the way they experience their home, training, and daily life can shape their emotional and physical health.
The Generation Pup Study provides an incredible opportunity for dog owners to contribute to vital research that helps us better understand these influences. By participating, you’ll be part of a movement that helps scientists answer crucial questions like:
- How do early-life experiences affect behaviour in adulthood?
- What environmental factors contribute to common health conditions?
- How can we improve training and management strategies for dogs?
This study has already uncovered fascinating insights. Findings include, dogs who were restricted to a crate/room overnight when they were ≤16 weeks of age were less likely to show separation related behaviours at six months of age, in comparison to dogs who were not restricted to enclosed spaces (daytime or overnight). However, its scope is far broader, looking at all aspects of a dog’s life to ensure they receive the best care possible.
At The Pet Carpenter, we advocate for “Gift Crate Confidence” because we believe in helping dogs feel safe and supported in the home. However, every element of a dog’s lifestyle including their social experiences, training methods, and daily routines, contributes to their wellbeing. That’s why we’re proud to support and share Generation Pup’s work in uncovering what truly benefits our dogs.
